A few weeks ago, Joseph launched their new album, I’m Alone, No You’re Not, and let me tell you, it is fantastic and everything beautiful. To accompany this exciting release, they played a small show at Music Millennium, one of my all-time favorite record stores in Portland.
I went to the show on a whim, got an autographed copy of their new record on vinyl + had the chance to briefly chat with the Closner sisters, who, by the way, are incredibly kind, gracious, authentic and, thus, so inspiring.
Prior to kicking off their tour, these boss ladies were kind enough to reserve some time to answer some questions for V+V via email:
VV: What inspires your music?
J: Life together. What you have and what you want. Landscapes out the window.
VV: “White Flag” is said to be a statement that reflects the mission of Joseph. What inspired the song and how does it reflect your goals for the future?
J: White Flag is a response to what scares us. There are a lot of devastating things happening in the world lately and it was really getting to us. It made us quiet and worried and heavy until we realized the only thing to do is keep our living life! To face those fears and oppose them by taking care of each other, enjoying every second and not letting the possibility of disaster steal our joy. White Flag is our declaration to keep showing up and to never give up, damnit! ️
VV: What has been the best part of your journey to this point?
J: Getting to do it together! We’ll have great stories to tell when we’re eighty.
VV: What role does style play in terms of how you represent yourselves as individuals on and off stage?
J: Style is our armor. We wear what makes us feel comfortable and the most like ourselves because when you get up on stage to say your vulnerable truths, you need to feel solid and confident.
VV: What advice do you have for others who have an innate desire to chase big dreams?
J: I’d say be kind to yourself and remember sometimes the hardest work is believing. Be genuine with the people you meet. People aren’t ladder rungs to be stepped on. Try to really see and hear them. Know that someone is going to do that thing you want to do… so why wouldn’t that someone be you?Joseph’s tour kicks off TONIGHT (!!) and if you get a chance to snag tickets to a show, I can’t say I think you’ll regret it. They’ll support both James Bay and Michael Kiwanuka in the coming months and have plans to tour with Duncan Fellows, William Wild, and Ruston Kelly in a variety of different cities.
PS. They’re also officially Apple music’s new artist of the week! So stoked to see Joseph making tremendous strides. Follow V+V on twitter and instagram for a chance to win a complimentary copy of I’m Alone, No You’re Not! We’ll select a winner early next week. Xo.
