White Out

As summer weather starts to ease its way into the PNW, I’m getting ready with some essential colors and pieces. White is one of my favorite hues, and embodies the carefree, light, and breezy spirit that summer boasts. Here are a few key pieces for the balmy days and nights ahead.

I was never a choker person until I stumbled upon this one from lulu’s. The white lace makes it so delicate, while still adding an edgy element to my outfit. I recommend grabbing a few white accessories like this; it can help fulfill your third piece rule.

This white courier shirt from Nordstrom Rack is also a new fave. it’s airy and light, and oh-so-easy to style with everything from shorts to skinny jeans to flowy harem pants. The silhouette of the shirt is very different from other trends I’ve seen, but I think it adds an interesting shape to your outfit.

While I do enjoy tank tops, I’m still a sucker for sweaters (yes, even in 80 degree weather). This sweater tank is the best of both worlds for me. The holes in the knit keep it breezy, but it also keeps me warm when the temps dip in the evening. It’s super cute with some ripped jeans and simple accessories.

Good luck keeping cool in those frosty whites!

Happy MDW, friends! In light of the American flags, bbq’s, bonfires + three day weekends, today (kinda) marks the beginning of the most anticipated season of the year: summer. (In case you couldn’t tell, I definitely identify as an optimist.)

Living in the Pacific Northwest, the constant string of sunny days doesn’t strike until mid-June. Nevertheless, summer style is undeniably on the rise! Here’s my MDW style guide – a hybrid between cozy comfort pieces that still embody my excitement for summer.

I love these Leith t-shirts from Nordstrom. In addition to the striped tee pictured above, I also own a black and a white tee. All three are go-to staples of my spring/summer wardrobe. They complement a variety of different pieces and accomplish a variety of unique looks.

Another subtle way to welcome summer? Warm-toned accessories. I’m a little biased when it comes to gold and rose gold jewelry, but nothing says summer like warm-toned arm candy.

The turquoise bracelet you see here is one of my favorites from The Shine Project + it’s a perfect piece for summer.

And of course, no look would be complete without my vintage Ray Bans. These sick puppies from the 80s are my favorite accessory for any outfit, and an obvious must for summer sunshine.

MDW look: striped t-shirt, black leggings, denim chambray top + black suede boots

rock & roll gallery: PVRIS @ Hawthorne Theatre

Last week, I attended the PVRIS show in Portland, Oregon. As an aspiring concert photographer, I was able to get media clearance, and get some amazing shots. PVRIS is one of my favorite rock bands out currently, and it fronted by boss lady Lynn Gvnn.

It’s a lazy sunday for v+v, so here’s a gallery of pictures for you to look at and to inspire you to get out and see a rock show.

Song-spired: Outfit Inspiration

With memorial day this monday, we have an opportunity to fit in one more chic outfit this weekend. We’re so grateful for those who have lost their lives while serving the country, and I hope your weekend is well spent with gratitude and love. I’ve chosen three songs that have inspired my outfits for the three days ahead.

Slide- tripp6
If music used white space the way art does, this song would be the epitome of that. its quick, tip-toeing beats and repetitive lyrics remind me of minimalism in all its glory. An all-white ensemble with snippets of color here and there are a cool style counterpart to this song.

Coconut Water- milk and bone
The vocals in milk and bone’s songs are feminine, clean, and modern. Their jams are perfect for a girl’s adventure to the beach or through the city. The combination of some chunky platform heels, a shift dress, and a choker are a sweet embodiment of this song.

The Woman that Loves You- japanese breakfast
This song is a spacey, sun-bleached anthem for road trips. Summer is practically here and this jam will be on repeat no doubt. The enchanting vocals and echoey guitar make for one rad combination. Ripped jeans, crop tops, and daring lipsticks are synonymous with the song.

teen vogue talk with tina

When I was in New York, I had the absolute pleasure of having coffee with Tina Ferraro, an associate beauty editor at Teen Vogue. Below you’ll find a photo diary that reflects a few components of our conversation.

For all the writers out there: I asked Tina about her strategy for combatting writer’s block. In addition to suggesting a leisurely walk, she also shared with me the power she finds in reading.

One of the things I admired most about Tina is her persistent, confident, go-get-em attitude. I loved Tina’s perspective as it pertains to being tenacious in the pursuit of your goals.

Takeaway – “Don’t be intimidated by people. Reach out to who you admire.”

What a #girlboss, amirite!?

Thanks so much for meeting with me, Tina! Xo.

Cali is Calling

Melissa, Uncategorized

My recent whirlwind trip to California sadly started on Friday and came to an end on Sunday. It just began to touch at the surface of quenching my travel bug, but despite the short period of time I was inspired nevertheless. I adore that California has a visual aesthetic. To me, Cali exudes bleached, washed-out pastels with splashes of color here and there. With a camera in hand I captured some of the art, music, and style inspiration that California is famous for.

There’s no problem finding an Insta-worthy wall in California. Bubble gum pink shades, music tribute poster-plastered walls, and walls teeming with succulents and flowers all make for breathtaking photos. Here are some rad pastel pieces to incorporate into your wardrobe curated from these photos: shirt, shoes, sunglasses.

The sea itself is also an enchanting place for inspiration. The dreamy blues of the waves mixed with the bright pastels of the sunsets are easy to incorporate into your closet. Swimsuits, flowy blouses, and rompers are all fun ways to rock these hues.

I also can’t pass up the sartorial inspiration I pull from the plants, succulents, and flora scattered across the state. Plant prints, florals, and tropical styles are all so fun to rock, especially during the summer. Not only are the prints trendy, but the plants themselves are too. A succulent garden is arguably the trendiest thing for social media pics right now.

How do places inspire the way you dress?

mood board monday

Recently I have been hooked on my new favorite app: Niice. It’s a great resource for channeling my inner inspiration to visually portray my thoughts, ideas and sense of style.

A few weeks ago, I started a Niice board for Velvet + Vinyl. It’s composed of black and white (obviously) and lots of pretty little things that inspire a balanced lifestyle and a crystallized sense of self expression.

I’ve compiled a few of my favorite images to share with y’all for a little monday mood board. Here’s to a week of great things + great style!

We want to know what inspires you and your sense of style. Share your images with us on Instagram at @velvetnvinyl.

single review: Phoebe Ryan and ‘Boyz n Poizn’

I have been a big fan of Phoebe Ryan for some time now. With many chart toppers on hype machine, an amazing collaboration with one of my faves Jaymes Young and a new single, “Boyz n Poizn” that is poppy and smooth, Ryan is an absolute standout in the industry.

What I love about Ryan is she has this lovely combination of innocent sound, and developed, direct and mature lyrics. All of her songs are pleasing to the ear and have catchy, foot-tapping beats that stay in your head all day long (not the least bit mad about it!) with a sister sound to Melanie Martinez, this playful, but seductive music is absolutely intoxicating, and a style that is completely unique and gaining more and more recognition.

Phoebe Ryan’s breathy-pop sound in ‘Boyz n Poizn’ is incredible. this little baby was debuted on soundcloud on may 18th and totally departs from the typical pop-vibe by adding in more sensual, badass and relatable lyrics. “Between the bars, back seats of cars finding god and riding the wave…”. Too good.

She also kills the badass girl game with edgy, f*** you lyrics like “every night it’s boys and poison, all I do is enjoy ’em, destroy ’em, until I feel what I wanna feel, what I wanna feel.” This is the ultimate badass girl anthem.

I am very impressed with this collaboration between Ryan and  Mike Del Rio of POWERS. I truly believe that Rio tied this package up perfectly.

Fashion Crush Friday: Emily Luciano

We’re all about empowering others at V + V and when we find a creative whose style, self, or music inspires us we want to share! As a lover of all things neutral, I stumbled across Emily Luciano’s instagram page and was not only obsessed, but inspired. Her creativity is also inspiring, especially when it comes to photos. The items she uses and the way she frames her photos excels at complementing her outfits. Her instagram and blog are one of the chicest mood boards we’ve seen. Not to mention her rose gold and white color theme is phenomenal.
